Health and Safety
Health and safety standards protect people and, in doing so, protect organizations from the operational, legal and reputational consequences of getting it wrong. This domain covers occupational health and safety with ISO 45001, food safety management with ISO 22000, and security operations management with ISO 18788 — three distinct disciplines united by their focus on preventing harm through a systematic, auditable approach.

Does ISO 45001 replace OHSAS 18001?
Yes. ISO 45001 superseded OHSAS 18001 as the international occupational health and safety management system standard, and the migration period for organizations holding OHSAS 18001 certification has closed. ISO 45001 follows the same high-level structure as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, which makes integrated management systems more straightforward.
How does ISO 22000 relate to HACCP?
ISO 22000 incorporates HACCP principles within a full food safety management system, adding management system requirements, interactive communication across the food chain, and prerequisite programmes. HACCP is a hazard analysis methodology; ISO 22000 is the management system that puts it in a governed, auditable framework.
Who is ISO 18788 for?
ISO 18788 specifies a management system for private security operations. It is aimed at organizations providing security services, particularly in complex or high-risk environments, and addresses human rights, legal compliance and operational governance alongside security delivery.
Is ISO 45001 certification required by law?
No. Occupational health and safety law varies by jurisdiction and certification to ISO 45001 is voluntary. Organizations pursue it to demonstrate systematic management of safety risk — often because customers, insurers or tender processes ask for it.
Do I need a safety background to start?
Not for Foundation, which introduces the standard and its terminology from first principles. Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor assume professional experience in the field.
